Preparing for your placement or professional role leaves you with a lot to think about and plan for. You may not be entirely sure you’ve got the workplace skills you need to get off to a strong start. This is where the Skills Centre comes in.

Keen to get workplace ready?

Access our brand-new Workplace Essentials provision. Developed in response to feedback from students and placement staff, this series of short, practical workshops is designed to help you build confidence in the core skills employers value most.

Each session lasts 50 minutes and focuses on a specific area of professional development. Whether you want to unlock the basic functionalities of Excel, learn how to approach meetings, or write emails with clarity and impact, these workshops offer targeted support to help you feel more capable in the workplace.

One of the strengths of this programme is its flexibility. We’ve included a mix of in-person and online workshops to suit different learning preferences and schedules. If you’re interested in a topic but can’t attend the session—or simply want to revisit the material—you’ll find supporting resources available on the Workplace Essentials Moodle page.

What does it cover?

The series covers a range of topics including:

  • Understanding spelling, punctuation and grammar
  • From blank page to published project: using Word
  • From zero to spreadsheet hero: using Excel
  • Message received: Writing emails that work
  • Make meetings matter: Speak up, stand out, stay on track
  • Thriving in a multicultural workplace

Whether you’re preparing for a placement, part-time role, or graduate position, these workshops are designed to help you feel more prepared and confident in professional environments.

You can view the full list of workshops and book a place via the Workplace Essentials page on MySkills.
