Opportunities Through The Arts Scholarship

Posted in: Uncategorised

During my first year at the University of Bath, I was heavily involved in the arts community. I was so inspired by the talent and commitment of students around me and therefore wanted to participate and improve myself. When choosing a university, having an active and high-level arts community was so important to me as I have always found dance an important release for my mental health aside from my studies. It's also something that I wish to do professionally at some point and therefore needed the opportunity to practice and improve whilst at university. After choreographing Grease for the musical theatre society, previous Arts Scholars approached me and recommended that I would benefit from applying in the new academic year. I was in awe of their talent and ambition and wanted to develop my skills to the same level, and so I went for it!

I have taken the role of Choreographer for the University's musical theatres society for their two main shows in the last 2 years. This has been the most beneficial thing for my skill, confidence and development that I have gained from my university experience so far. I used my dance teaching skill to teach and build the societies' confidence to transform their performances to a wonderful display of dance talent which got highlighted by all critique reviews. It has been so rewarding hearing feedback from the cast about how they have enjoyed stepping out their comfort zone to develop their dance skill and I have helped give them the confidence to continue to improve and participate in dance. Over the last year, I have had the opportunity to work with multiple West End chorographers in their shows' rehearsal stages. This has allowed me to learn from top practitioners and transfer my skills to the arts community within the university. I also continue to teach a weekly dance class to young people in Frome to inspire a new generation of dancers. My main goal is always to spread my love and passion for dance and teach others to love it as well. I have been so lucky to have had optimum opportunity to do this during my time at university.

Overall, being involved in the arts community aided by the Arts Scholarship program at the University of Bath will be the thing that will stand out to me when I look back at my time here. Being given the space, time and funds to develop my art is something unique to this university and something I will always support. I will always credit the arts community here for building my skill and confidence to such an extent I was able to transfer my art to a profession level. I would not have been able to do this without the support given by the Arts Team.

Come September, I will be participating in Trinity Labans BA (Hons) in Contemporary dance. This course is one of the top in the world for developing dancers and choreographers and I'm super excited to be able to continue to work with like-minded talented people and hopefully achieve my dream of joining a professional dance company full time. I hope I will be able to continue visiting the University and the arts community to transfer my ever-progressing skills to other inspiring artists in the hope that I can be part of the community at Bath who helps young people progress professionally into the industry.
