We ask current international students to share their experience of living in the UK. In this blog Psychology student Riya shares her thoughts...
What’s surprised you about moving to/living in the UK?
Rarely anyone in the UK uses umbrellas when it rains! I found it quite interesting that people only take their umbrellas out it’s a heavy downpour. But it makes sense now though, knowing how misty the rain gets!
What do you miss most about your hometown/country? How have you overcome this, was there a positive outcome?
I think I miss the overall feel of my hometown in Kerala. I feel this especially when I miss out on festivals from home, but the people, food, celebrations, and our family traditions are something I often miss. But I have to say that I’ve come to love Bath very much! It has a very calm and quaint-city charm, with beautiful buildings and very nice people.
What is the biggest similarity between your hometown/country and Bath/UK?
I would say the greenery? The flora and fauna are definitely different, but both the UK and Kerala is rich with naturally lush places everywhere. Although this may be difficult to see here during the winter, it still makes me feel close to home.
What are your top three things to do in Bath?
- Walking by Bathwick Hill with the city view (extra points if its during Spring)
- Walking around the Christmas Market at night!
- Exploring the Roman Baths- more because it is a must-visit spot as Bath uni students.
Are you part of any clubs/societies at Uni or in Bath?
I am the publicity officer for Bath Food Society, and treasurer of Malayali Society! Highly recommend trying out our events 🙂 I also attend Islamic Society, crochet soc, badminton soc, and other miscellaneous society events that look interesting to me.
What do you love most about living in Bath?
The city is so beautiful! Exploring different parts of Bath never fails to improve my mood. I would highly recommend walking around aimlessly every once in a while, and perhaps finding new favourite spots along the way.
What’s your favourite place to eat/favourite takeaway in Bath?
Very hard question, but I would say Chilli Family Noodles for a meal, or Ji’s Chicken for a snack of popcorn chicken!
What’s the best or worst thing you’ve eaten since being in the UK?
One of the best meals I’ve had in Bath would either be the lasagna or cinnamon rolls that my flatmates and I made together last year. The worst… some readymade soup which I definitely over-salted…
Is there somewhere in Bath/UK that you’d like to go but haven’t been yet?
I haven’t been to Scotland yet, but it is in my travel list for sure!
What’s your favourite or weirdest UK tradition you have learnt about?
It’s definitely not the weirdest UK tradition, but eating fish and chips by the beach? At first it sounded a bit random, but honestly it seems quite nice.
What’s your favourite British slang/word?
Hearing ‘bits and bobs’ never fails to make me smile.
What’s your top tip for International Students?
One thing I would’ve loved to hear as an international fresher is that we’re all on the same boat! It is very easy to feel overwhelmed when you’re in a new place- juggling your course, navigating the city, meeting new people, and being away from your family and friends. But it may be comforting to know that EVERYONE goes through this. You may feel alone, but it is natural to take your time with getting used to things. And more importantly, if you ever feel stuck or need support with anything- it’s okay to ask for help! Be it from your friends, or university services like Student Support. Good luck!
