Blown away: How a Bath Insights intern transformed our team

Posted in: Bath Insights, Staff story

We were lucky enough to host four interns in the SU, but I was only managing one intern directly in the SU Voice Team. Being a relatively new manager, I was a bit nervous about taking on a student to work with us over a short period of time. But I will be the first to say that I underestimated the internship

My expectations were blown out the water by our intern, Jenny.

We were in a period of low staffing and in the middle of a big review of representation during the early summer months. Without Jenny, we wouldn’t have been able to produce new support materials, such as the Rep handbook, bringing all the information Reps might need into one place. She also created the structure for new training modules based on feedback from students and staff, promotional material for the new department rep role, and so much more!

One of the elements I didn’t expect to get out of this programme was the insight into the student experience from a student who did not heavily engage with the SU.

Jenny was able to tell me where systems were complicated as well as share her views on why some students may not engage with their Reps. I highly encourage areas to look at this programme as it can truly embed student voice at an operational level, to better enhance every element of your service.
