Just finishing your PhD?

Posted in: Advice, For PhDs

I'm aware that at this time of year some of our PhD students may be in the final stages of writing up their PhD or have recently submitted.
The final stages of a PhD can be an emotional rollercoaster: the stress and intense busyness of getting everything finished, exhilaration at finally getting there, and then possible uncertainty about what might be next.

We're aware in the Careers Service that in the final stages of your PhD you're likely to have limited time and energy for career planning. We wanted to give a few quick things you can do to help you move from anxiety about your future to proactivity:

- check out our dedicated web pages for researchers. These have lots of information on career options for your discipline and links to job sites.
- check out the specific vacancies section 'For PhD students' in myfuture.
- sign up for relevant email lists; these will often send job adverts direct to your inbox and make job-hunting feel that little bit easier
- sign up for our lunchtime webinar series next week via Doctoral Skills. We'll be covering some key careers topics including job-hunting with a doctorate, networking, writing effective applications and interviews. The webinar recordings will be made available afterwards via the Doctoral Skills Moodle site.
- book a careers appointment for 1:1 careers advice and guidance. Contrary to popular opinion, you don't have to know what you want to do before speaking to a careers adviser.
- remember you can still access the Careers Service as a graduate

The end of a PhD can feel overwhelming - do contact our colleagues in Student Services if you feel you'd benefit from a bit of support.
