From interns to coaches: How Bath Insights strengthened Careers support

Posted in: Bath Insights - Staff story, Internships

We've hosted two Bath Insights interns in Careers in both the 2024 and 2025 cohorts.

Our most recent intern spent the summer creating a Get Started guide on workplace transitions – something we'd been meaning to tackle but hadn't found time for. The key thing was that as a student preparing for the workplace herself, she could approach it from a genuine student perspective rather than our professional assumptions.

She also helped with social media content, drawing from her own experiences. Having someone who's currently going through the challenges we help students with gave us useful insights into whether our guidance actually resonates.

Beyond specific projects, having a student on the team meant we could quickly test ideas and get honest feedback. It's easy to lose touch with how students actually experience career challenges when you're always on the advisory side.

Both interns were genuinely motivated and brought fresh approaches to our work.

Watching them present their projects at the end was rewarding – you could see how much confidence they'd gained over the eight weeks.

What we hadn't anticipated was both interns continuing with us as Student Employability Coaches after their internships ended. They'd proven themselves so capable that we wanted to keep working with them.

The resources they created during their internships are still being used regularly, and having them continue in coaching roles has maintained that valuable student perspective in our ongoing work.
