John Mark Comer’s book “The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry” describes a new way of living. After rest, reconnection and re-wiring, where we are restored to God. There are further things to do. Christian’s are continually being transformed into the people they were intended to be. This is a God guided process. Disciples are life-long learners.
John Mark Comer describes a wonderful model where we regard ourselves as apprentices of Jesus and as apprentices we set out to:
- Be with Jesus
- Become like Jesus
- Do what he would do if he were you
This is exciting! It is possible to acquire a little bracelet that reminds you – WWJD – what would Jesus do?
And we are not alone. Look at this part of Jesus’ mighty prayer in John 17:
6 “I have revealed you to those whom you gave me out of the world. I gave them the words you gave me, and they accepted them. They knew with certainty that I came from you, and they believed that you sent me. 9 I pray for them. 11Father, protect them by the power of] your name.17 Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. 18 As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world. 19 For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified. (John 17)
Here we see Jesus setting out the template for the life He wants those who follow Him – those who believe that He was sent by His Father. And Jesus prayers for us, He asks God to protect us, and to sanctify us to proclaim the truth.
And so we prepare to return our life at the University as student or staff. We are continually learning from each other how to live in the complex society of which we are part. As we turn the newsfeed and emails back on, so we have the challenge of putting the resolutions we make on holiday into practice. We’re here to encourage each other. These life-skills – crucial for a balanced and productive life as an apprentice of Jesus – are caught and not taught.
We are then better equipped to be part of the Christian mission to proclaim hope.
