Director of Technical Services, Julian Sulley, gives us an update on what's happened and what will be happening around the Faculty.
- Technicians Development Week, 16th to 20th July. Organised By David Williams and Chris Carey to promote training, development and greater awareness amongst the technicians in both the faculties of Engineering & Design and Science
- Elec Eng teaching labs refurbishment. Major refurbishment of the three main teaching laboratories on level 2 in Elec Eng involving asbestos removal, new ceilings, lighting, air handling, flooring and laboratory furniture. This project was postponed from last year
- ACE V-Simulator installation. The installation of a simulation rig in the structures laboratory in ACE involving major construction work including the provision of a mezzanine floor. The rig will simulate the effect of wind and sway on high rise buildings
- Chem Eng Absorption column final commissioning. The installation of a new absorption rig in the newly refurbished pilot plant in Chem Eng was finally completed recently and has now been fully commissioned
- New starters – 8 (1 in Chem, 2 in Elec, 3 in Mech and 2 in ACE). This year we have welcomed eight new technicians into the FED, Angela Calvar Santamaria into Chem Eng, Fatima Mustafa and Dr Aleksandrs Sergejevs into Elec Eng, Jacob Rye, Mark Wellman and George de Fossard into Mech Eng and Dr Olivier Camus and Steve Handley into ACE
- Promotions / upgrades – 9 (1 in ACE, 1 in Elec and 7 in Mech). Congratulations to the following technicians on their respective promotions, ACE - Neil Price to Technical Supervisor, Elec Eng - David Chapman to Senior Technician, Mech Eng – Dave Wood to Technical Supervisor (Laboratories), Jim Cansell to Technical Supervisor (PVRC), Tom Holley, James Burge and Craig Bayliss to Senior Technician (PVRC), Paul Griffiths to Senior Technician (Workshops), Ben Hampton to Technician (PVRC)
- Apprentices. Congratulations to Aiden Flynn who successfully completed his advanced apprenticeship in August in the main workshop and has now attained fully skilled technician status. Congratulations also to our two second-year apprentices, Alastair Hook and Daniel Ball who have both completed and passed their BTEC Level 3 Diplomas at the City of Bath college as they enter their third and final year of their apprenticeships in the instrumentation and model shop laboratories respectively
- Student work experience placements. We have welcomed 21 work experience placement students this year in all four faculty departments. My thanks go to all our technicians who continue to devote their time and continued support to the visiting students
