Starting university is exciting – and overwhelming. I arrived at Bath eager to learn but unsure how I'd manage the cost of living or make the most of the opportunities available. That’s when the Claverton Scholarship came in. In this blog, I share how the Claverton Scholarship Programme supported me through my first year at Bath – from managing finances to finding my feet socially and academically. Whether you're considering applying or just curious, here’s what the experience meant to me.
Motivation to Apply
I was first drawn to the Claverton Scholarship by its Employability Passport and the financial support it offered. The Employability Passport focuses on three core areas: employability support, inspiring and enriching experiences, and personal and professional development. All three matched my goals for university, so applying felt like a natural step.
Opening New Doors
As a Claverton Scholar, I regularly receive opportunities I wouldn’t have come across otherwise. The scholarship team shares everything from career fairs and insight days to job adverts and additional funding opportunities, helping me expand both my academic and professional horizons.
Two standout examples were the NHS Data Analysis Challenge, where I completed online training and assignments to sharpen my skills in data analysis and visualisation using R and Python, and the Bath Insight Internship, which became my first experience of full-time work. It allowed me to earn while learning, build confidence in a professional environment, and gain a better understanding of workplace dynamics.
Thanks to the Claverton Scholarship Programme, I've been able to access opportunities that push me beyond the classroom and into real-world learning—opening doors I wouldn’t have known existed.
Relieving Financial Pressure
Once you complete the Employability Passport, you receive £1,500 split across your second and final years. That funding makes a real difference. For me, it eased the financial strain of university life and allowed me to focus more on academics and self-development rather than worrying about expenses.
Claverton Summer School Highlights
The Claverton Summer School was a brilliant three-day experience that brought scholars together for learning, networking, and fun. One of the standout sessions was a personal development workshop that encouraged us to become the best version of ourselves. We also had a cream tea afternoon where we connected with local companies and university teams – a relaxed yet productive environment to build new relationships. One such connection was with 180 Degrees Consulting Bath, a student-led consultancy working on social impact projects. Speaking with their team gave us a valuable insight into how students are creating meaningful change beyond the classroom.
Looking Ahead
This scholarship has impacted my journey at Bath in so many ways. I feel more capable academically and professionally. I've developed confidence, built connections, and gained skills I’ll carry forward into my career. I’m excited about what lies ahead and confident I can achieve even more.
If you’re thinking of applying – do it. You've got nothing to lose, and so much to gain.
