Last week Professor Rajani Naidoo (Vice-President (Community & Inclusion)) and Kevin McCormick (Head of Campus Services Commercial Operations) undertook the Wheelchair Challenge on campus.
This challenge was set up by the aFLAME Disability Network: Staff and PGRs to show the lived experience of wheelchair users on campus.
Starting at the Chancellors’ Building they had a safety briefing and got the feel for practicalities of using a wheelchair. Then crossing campus across a variety of roads and paths - accessing the library, toilets, lifts and a café were all part of the challenge.
Comments from Rajani and Kevin were:
“It really opens your eyes, more people need to do this challenge. Even with ramps it is still hard, I could not do that for 8 hours a day, it takes a lot out of you.”
