"On this Day, UNESCO would like to call upon everyone to celebrate cultural diversity, through which we will be able to build the intellectual and moral solidarity of humankind."
Cultural diversity is not just a concept but a living reality of many people. The significance of fostering cultural dialogue and understanding it in all spaces we go to or work at should be recognised in a conscious decision. Every year on 21 May, the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development serves as a reminder of the importance of our cultural heritage. It's a day to celebrate the whole mosaic of traditions, languages, and customs that make our world so vibrant and dynamic.
World Day for Cultural Diversity isn't just about having fun (although that's a big part of it). It's also about building bridges between people from different backgrounds, fostering understanding, and promoting peace.
Have you considered striking up a conversation with someone from a different culture you may be curious about?
Embracing cultural diversity is good for society too. Whenever we embrace different perspectives and ideas, we open ourselves up to a world of possibilities. Innovation, creativity, and progress, even economy – they all thrive in an environment where diversity is celebrated.
Why not take a moment today to go further than just reading about the day – and instead try actively appreciating the Cultures? A few ideas to consider doing:
- Maybe you can cook a dish from a cuisine you've never tried before
- Listen to some music from a different country?
- You could even learn a few words in a new language.
- Find out which is the next country to celebrate their national day or ask your colleague or international friend when they celebrate theirs, and what are the celebrations like?
- Research a country’s famous artists, scientists or writers – perhaps you can discover some interesting stories about their lives?
- Learn about a colleague's religion or traditions they celebrate and show your awareness by offering good wishes on the main celebration event day (make sure to check before, whether they actually celebrate it).
- Compare traditional music with a friend or a colleague from a different culture
Happy World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development!
