Why did you choose to study at Bath?

I pursued A Levels in mathematics, physics, engineering and electronics, naturally leading me towards a degree in electrical and electronic engineering. My research into the top universities in this field led me to Bath, which immediately felt like the right fit after my visit.

Securing a sponsorship, a prerequisite for the programme, solidified my decision to attend the University. While geographically the furthest from my Newcastle home among the top five universities I considered, Bath ultimately proved to be the ideal environment for my academic and personal growth.

Did you have a particular career in mind when you chose your course?

My career as a design engineer began during my undergraduate studies, reflecting my passion for engineering which I had pursued as a hobby before university. While a dedicated learner, I initially struggled with the volume of theoretical material required at university level. Later, I realised I was dyslexia, which explained some of my earlier challenges.

Despite these obstacles, I persevered with my studies, driven by my determination to complete the programme. The supportive university environment played a crucial role in my success, and I remained committed to my academic goals and ultimately graduated. I subsequently joined my sponsoring company, where I gained valuable experience before pursuing other opportunities.

Can you tell us about your experience of studying here?

Growing up in the West End of Newcastle, I developed a distinctive accent, which initially presented a minor communication challenge! However, I quickly adapted and thrived in the university environment.

I actively engaged in extracurricular activities, including Jujitsu and lacrosse. My participation on the men's city lacrosse team, while not a professional endeavour by any stretch of the imagination, provided invaluable social and personal-growth experiences. Beyond specific activities, university offered a unique opportunity for self-discovery and personal development.

Describe your career journey since graduating. What is a typical day like in your current role?

Following my departure from the sponsoring company, I embarked on a dynamic career within the oil and gas industry. My journey encompassed diverse roles, from field operations on oil rigs to operations management and business-development leadership positions.

Fuelled by a lifelong passion for travel and continuous learning, I have gained international experience across Europe, the USA, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. This unwavering commitment to personal and professional growth has been instrumental in my ascent to executive leadership.

As CEO, my primary focus is fostering a high-performance culture and continuous improvement within myself and the team, ultimately driving the company towards sustained excellence. I have documented this transformative journey in a book that chronicles the challenges and triumphs of revitalising a struggling company in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates

How did your studies help you to develop, professionally and/or personally?

My university experience extended beyond the technical aspects of electrical and electronic engineering. It cultivated within me the invaluable qualities of resilience and perseverance, equipping me with the ability to navigate challenges and maintain a strong work ethic even in the face of adversity.

The enduring friendships forged during this period provided unwavering support and encouragement throughout my academic journey. While the degree served as a valuable credential for the next chapter, the invaluable life lessons learned during my time at the University proved to be the most enduring and impactful.

The journey, encompassing personal and professional growth, proved far more significant than acquiring a degree. The intimate setting of the University of Bath, with its close-knit community of approximately 3,500 students, fostered a strong sense of belonging. My involvement with the city lacrosse team provided a valuable outlet for social interaction and camaraderie. Through these experiences, I cultivated essential life skills, such as effective communication, teamwork and a forward-looking mindset. These invaluable lessons are a solid foundation for my continued personal and professional development.

What advice would you give to current students considering studying your course?
