Benson Pang came to Bath from Hong Kong to study Economics, sold by the prospect of a year in industry and the expansive green spaces on campus.
After a successful ten-year run in banking, he decided to follow his passion and transition to his current HR career. He now spends his days empowering employees to be the best they can be through career coaching.
Benson is also a member of the Hong Kong Chapter, which is now seeking to appoint new committee members. Read to find out more about how he keeps his connection to Bath alive from the other side of the world...
Why did you choose to study at Bath?
I knew I wanted to study in the UK, but the main reason I chose Bath was the industrial placement scheme. At the time, not many institutions in the UK had these programmes. This, as well as the structured and comprehensive support provided, really appealed to me.
After I completed my second year, I managed to secure a placement at UBS London. This was a fruitful experience that helped me to secure a summer internship, followed by a graduate programme during the global financial crisis in 2009.
Also, coming from such a densely populated city, I was drawn to the nature and open spaces on campus.
Did you have a particular career in mind when you chose your course?
I didn’t really. I chose economics because it was a very practical discipline that I could relate to real life. I really enjoyed studying economics at A-level, so it felt like an obvious next step.
Describe your career journey since graduating. What is a typical day like in your current role?
I spent ten years in the banking industry, starting in London before moving back to Hong Kong.
In 2018, I left to follow my passion. I now focus on HR consulting, corporate coaching and career coaching. This sees me going into companies and training employees on soft skills. I concentrate on areas such as leadership, communication, and presenting. Basically, helping teams to elevate and upskill.
I now love what I do. I enjoy how meaningful my current career is and it's great to see the impact my work has. Seeing people in my workshops have that 'aha moment' is fantastic.
What would you say to anyone considering a career change?
Try it. Take the plunge and follow your passion, life is too short not to. It may not work, but it's always better to try.
How did your studies help you in your career?
I would say the knowledge and skills I learnt in my degree helped me to set a good foundation to enter the banking world. The placement scheme allowed me to relate what I had learnt at university in a real business setting and empowered me in the transition from a full time student to a working professional.
I graduated in 2009, during a period of great uncertainty for banking. The job market was highly competitive – people were struggling to find jobs in the financial industry, and many had to study for a master's as there simply weren't as many jobs. Thankfully, my placement year led to a summer internship which then led to a graduate scheme. It definitely helped me to stand out against other graduates without that experience.
You have been involved in the University of Bath Hong Kong Chapter since 2013. Can you tell us a bit about the roles you have taken on during that time and what they have involved?
I have served as Membership Director throughout my time on the committee. I was involved in organising various alumni activities with the committee; supporting local University events as well as fostering alumni connections and building the community in Hong Kong.
A key flagship project that I am particularly proud of was the Bath alumni sharing event I initiated since 2019. The objective was to connect current students at Bath with alumni in Hong Kong; providing a platform to learn from each other and strengthen the sense of belonging. This initiative also builds awareness for the chapter, encouraging Bath students to join our community after graduating.
What experiences have you enjoyed the most from being a committee member?
Definitely the bonding and fun with fellow committee members. I’ve made lasting friendships and have been inspired by the stories and experiences of the alumni we meet. It’s a great way to stay connected with the University of Bath, and over the years it has made me even prouder to be a part of the Bath alumni community.
The appreciation I’ve received from members has also been a big motivator, and it’s what has kept me committed to the committee for the past 12 years.
From your perspective, what are the benefits to alumni living in Hong Kong of having an active University of Bath Hong Kong Chapter?
It's a brilliant opportunity to access a great community with amazing backgrounds, stories and experiences. It offers excellent networking opportunities and a platform for alumni to continue developing skills while maintaining that Bath connection.
But the best thing is truly the people. The Hong Kong Chapter is a supportive group and your active involvement will nurture your connection to the University of Bath, even from so far away.
What advice would you give to those considering taking on a committee role?
