On 10 September, we mark World Suicide Prevention Day - a global moment to reflect, connect, and act. This year’s theme, “Changing the Narrative on Suicide”, calls on us all to challenge stigma, foster open conversations, and build a culture of care and connection.
Suicide is a deeply personal and complex issue, affecting people of all ages and backgrounds. The impact is felt across families, workplaces, and communities - including our own here at Bath.
That’s why our approach to suicide prevention is rooted in compassion, collaboration, and action. As Chair of the University’s Suicide Prevention Working Group, I work closely with colleagues and student representatives to ensure we are taking meaningful, evidence-informed steps to support our community. Our Suicide-Safer Community Action Plan outlines our strategic priorities and annual actions to reduce risk, raise awareness, and strengthen support.
This work reflects our wider commitment to mental health and wellbeing through Be Well at Bath - our whole-University approach, which I’m proud to champion at executive level. Whether you’re a student, a member of staff, or part of our wider community, your wellbeing matters. We all have a role to play in creating a safe, supportive environment where people feel able to speak up and seek help.
This year, the campaign shares five key messages:
- Reach Out and Check In
A simple “How are you?” can make a real difference. Let’s take time to connect with those around us - friends, peers, colleagues. - Your Words Matter
Speak with kindness and empathy. Use language like “died by suicide” or “took their life” to reduce stigma and respect those affected. - Be Safe Online
Share responsibly. Avoid graphic content and always include support resources when discussing sensitive topics. - Let’s Talk About Suicide
Silence can be harmful. Learn to spot the signs and start the conversation. You don’t need to be an expert to help. Student Support, in collaboration with students, has recently written a new guide: How to support a friend feeling suicidal - Know Where to Get Help
Familiarise yourself with support services. Knowing where to turn can save lives.
We offer a wide range of support for both students and staff, including:
- Be Well – Talk Now: 24/7 support for students
- Health Assured: 24/7 counselling for staff
- Staff Wellbeing Resources: e-learning, workshops, support networks & more
- External services like Samaritans (116 123) and text SHOUT to 85258
A Call to Action: Take 20 Minutes to Make a Difference
Following this year’s World Suicide Prevention Day, I am asking all colleagues and students to take less than half an hour to complete suicide awareness training. This small step can make a big difference in helping us support one another and save lives.
- Staff: Please complete the Zero Suicide Alliance Suicide Awareness Training (approx. 20 minutes)
- Students: Please complete the University Student Suicide Awareness Training
Let’s continue to build a University culture where everyone feels safe, supported, and empowered to speak up. Together, we can change the narrative - and save lives.
