We're delighted to announce that we will be launching Writing Cafés for postgraduate students in semester 2 2024-25. These will be friendly, supportive spaces where students can share best practice and learn more about academic writing. Each café will have a theme, with different discussions hosted on different tables. Possible discussion topics include planning and structuring ideas, finding sources, referencing and citations, time management / procrastination, and dealing with feedback.
Each discussion will be facilitated by a student Writing Guide. Writing Guides will play a key role in supporting groups at each writing café by facilitating conversation, answering student questions, supporting participation, and signposting to additional resources. The role is a fantastic opportunity to take on casual paid work whilst studying, and to share your writing approaches and skills with other students. To be effective as a Writing Guide, you'll need to have strong academic writing skills and be a clear communicator who is positive and enthusiastic.
You'll also need to be confident in facilitating groups, and able to manage small group activities. We'll give you full training, which will include a two-hour in-person training session in mid-March. After that, you'll need to be able to attend all five planned cafés, which will run once a month from March - July 2025.
We welcome applications from all Postgraduate Research students, but are particularly interested in hearing from you if you have demonstrable academic writing skills, and experience in facilitation.
In return for your contribution, you will be paid an hourly rate of £12.00 (CW3) and acquire invaluable experience alongside key employability skills such as teamwork, collaboration, and adaptability.
Applications will close at midday (12:00) on 29 January 2025. To apply, send Leah McCue a brief covering letter explaining your suitability for the role.
