We ask current students about their life at the University of Bath and their tops tips for being a student. In this blog we speak to Poetica, a Psychology student, about lecture hacks, pizza, and uphill climbs.
If you could go back…what advice would you give to yourself at the start of your first year?
I’d tell myself to be more confident when meeting new people. There were so many people I was terrified to talk to because I thought they’d never like me, but once I did, they ended up becoming some of my closest friends at uni.
What is your best student hack?
Take notes on paper instead of digitally since physically writing them will help you memorize things. If your lecture goes too fast to take manual notes, take digital ones and rewrite the important bits after.
Favourite meal to share with friends?
My flatmates and I started making homemade pizzas together and they always turn out so good (plus we have a lot of fun making them).
What café, restaurant or place in town is your favourite?
Chili Family Noodles, hands down.
What is your hidden gem in Bath?
The board game café by the Jane Austen Centre! The staff there are so lovely and it’s such a fun way to spend an afternoon with friends.
What do you do to unwind?
Make a hot cup of tea and do some journaling or colouring.
How do you like to spend your time with friends?
I love going out for a meal or coffee in town, or having a picnic in a park if the weather’s nice.
What is your best money saving tip?
Keep a spending tracker so you know what things you’re spending the most money on and where you can potentially cut down. Also, always ask about student discounts.
Who or what picks you up when you are down?
Going for a long walk always makes me feel so much better. Or talking to a friend or family member about whatever’s bothering me.
What’s your worst habit?
I definitely spend way too much time scrolling on the internet when I should be doing other things (but I’m working on it!)
What helps you focus or be productive?
Working in a distraction-free setting like the library or Virgil building. I swear I always get twice as much work done there as I do at home.
Best place to go for some fresh air?
Alexandra Park or Bathwick Meadows. The views are stunning and 100% worth the uphill climbs.
What couldn’t you live without?
Notion! I have half of my life organized on there: information about all of my modules, my weekly planner and to-do list, recipes I want to try, and just about anything else you could think of.
What is your favourite song and why?
It’s so hard to choose but if I had to, I’d say Drops of Jupiter by Train. It’s such a beautiful song and I grew up hearing it on the radio all the time as a kid, so I have a lot of good memories attached to it.
Best piece of advice you have been given?
It’s okay to not always know what you’re doing. All that matters is that you’re persistent and trying to be a better person than you were yesterday.
