Life by the Lake with Rosie

Posted in: Life by the Lake

We ask current students about their life at the University of Bath and their tops tips for being a student.  In this blog we speak to Rosie, a Modern Languages student about batch cooking, bubble tea, and lo-fi beats.

If you could go back…what advice would you give to yourself at the start of your first year?

Don’t put so much pressure on yourself. First year can be tricky, and it takes a while to figure things out and find your way. Remember that it can take a bit of time to feel fully settled.

What is your best student hack?

Get involved in clubs and societies early. Joining football at the start of first year helped me to meet so many amazing friends, stay active and be part of lots of social events.

Favourite meal to share with friends?

Ramen - it’s both easy and cheap to make in bulk. Can add any extras you want and can easily customise to make meat or veggie. I’ve found lots of simple recipes online & on TikTok!

What café, restaurant or place in town is your favourite?

Olé Tapas- it’s a really tiny restaurant above the cheese shop near Queens square. Lovely atmosphere and the food is amazing!

What is your hidden gem in Bath?

Solsbury Hill - only a 15 min drive from centre of Bath. It has the most beautiful sunset views and I always feel so peaceful sat up there.

What do you do to unwind?

Read, read, read. Books have always helped me to escape & transport my mind somewhere else. They’re a great distraction from my busy mind.

How do you like to spend your time with friends?

Sharing meals together. One of my favourite dinners was when everyone bought their own dish and we had loads of different foods to share all together.

What is your best money saving tip?

Meal prepping. Buying and cooking food in bulk and then freezing lots of portions will save you time, money & energy.

Who or what picks you up when you are down?

My family. Even if I’m not physically with them, often a phone call and a catch up is all I need to feel a bit brighter. Thank goodness for FaceTime!

What’s your worst habit?

Picking my nails…

What helps you focus or be productive?

Being outside and taking breaks from my studies. If I’m on campus, I’ll take a 10 minute walk around the lake to clear my head before studying again.

Best place to go for some fresh air?

Alexandra park. It has great views of Bath, especially in the evening. If you’re lucky you get their same time as the cake van!

What couldn’t you live without?

Headphones. I love listening to music, particularly when I am studying, exercising and relaxing.

What is your favourite song and why?

Superstitious by Stevie Wonder. Such an iconic song. It reminds me of my childhood and makes me feel so happy.

Best piece of advice you have been given?

Don’t sweat the small stuff. It’s easy to get caught up in things when we’re in it, but when we take a step back, often things don’t feel quite so overwhelming anymore.
