Seeing classmates secure graduate scheme offers in autumn can make you feel behind if you haven't got your post-university plans sorted. But here's something that might surprise you - those early-deadline graduate schemes? They're actually just a small piece of the graduate employment puzzle.
There are plenty of opportunities ahead
While some major employers run structured graduate schemes with autumn deadlines, many organizations recruit graduates year-round. These companies hire based on their immediate needs, often with much shorter timelines between application and start date. In fact, if you're in your final year, the best time to apply for these roles is about three months before you're ready to start working.
Even the big graduate scheme employers sometimes have additional recruitment rounds in spring and summer. It's worth following their social media and checking their careers pages regularly to catch these opportunities.
And remember - if you missed out on autumn applications this year, many graduate schemes welcome applications from recent graduates too. Just keep in mind that autumn applications typically mean starting work the following summer or autumn, so you'll need to plan for that gap year.
It's okay to focus on your studies
Finding yourself overwhelmed with assignments, revision, part-time work, and life in general? It's completely reasonable to put your job search on hold. Job hunting can feel like a full-time job itself, and many employers understand that final year students need to prioritize their studies.
While thinking about your future career is important, so is doing well in your degree. If you need to focus on your studies right now – that's absolutely fine! Graduate opportunities won't disappear after graduation.
