How my Bath Insights internship made me a better communicator

Posted in: Bath Insights - Student story, Internships

Hi, I'm Noah Tucker. Last Friday marked the end of my 2-month internship with the Doctoral College at the University of Bath, where I had the pleasure of working within the Doctoral Development Team.

Key highlights from July included:

  • Supporting a Writing Retreat at Cricklade Hotel
  • Assisting the Events team during graduation ceremonies
  • Getting involved with 2025/26 planning, researching venues for next year’s Writing Retreats, and collecting and analysing feedback data from the events
  • Presenting my internship experience to the Doctoral College in our monthly meeting

Across such a diverse range of tasks, I’ve grown in more ways than expected. Some key takeaways from the experience include:

  • Behind-the-scenes event planning. I gained hands-on experience in how events are run, and how different teams collaborate to make them happen. With my interest in business, this insight is invaluable
  • Organisation and planning skills. I created my own colour-coded system to enable me to stay on track with tasks and deliver on time
  • Communication skills. By emailing and communicating with various people from different positions and departments around the university, my written and verbal communication skills have been improved. At first, I struggled to write concise, professional emails but with practice my email-writing skills improved greatly

Overall, I have really enjoyed my experience during this internship.

A big thank goes out to the Doctoral Development Team: Oli S., Fiona Alexander, Caitlin Naylor and Taif Aljebory for being excellent to work with and helping me achieve everything I wanted and more. Additionally, thank you to my other colleagues in the Doctoral College for being so welcoming to me.
