Micro Internships as a first-year student

Posted in: Internships, Micro Internships - Student story

Hi! I'm Avie, and I'm halfway through my first year of studying Civil Engineering at the University of Bath. I recently took the opportunity to participate in Bath's Micro Internship scheme, and completed a week with engineers at Morgan Sindall.

As a first-year student, I often find it difficult to narrow down my career interests. With aspirations to complete a summer placement during my time here, I saw the opportunity to gain some insights into life as a contractor, and I had a go at applying for the internship. After hurriedly putting together a CV on the train the night before the application deadline, I was accepted into the internship!

My experience

The internship took place over a week in December, in Morgan Sindall's Swindon office. Over the week, I experienced a range of different responsibilities, from progress report meetings with Network Rail to developing a comprehensive site management plan. I have gained a much better understanding of how engineering projects are carried out by contractors, and this has improved my knowledge about different design considerations. Putting together all of the information I picked up over the week felt very rewarding. I was proud of my work and grateful to have learned so much.

My advice to anyone interested

Overall, I could not recommend this experience more. Though I'm still undecided about my career aspirations, I know that this experience will help me in whatever career or placement I pursue. My main piece of advice would be to have a CV ready for any opportunity that might pop up!

I am truly grateful for the support of the Careers department at Bath, and for my hosts at Morgan Sindall who were incredibly welcoming and eager to help.
