Us and Them

Posted in: Uncategorised

I think we are living through a very unsettling time. It does not matter where we look there appears to be disharmony, disunity and uncertainty. Our society and so many of its institutions are chaotic and shambolic. Truth and decency appear to have become casualties of expediency.

We are exposed to polarisation and exhorted towards a relentless pitting of ‘us against them’ (whoever ‘them’ might be!). The global stage is equally chaotic and unstable with ‘wars and rumours of wars’ being enthusiastically reported via media and social networking alike. The media and those in ‘authority’ are keen, it would seem, that we live in a constant state of crisis and emergency.

Now whilst there is some legitimacy to see certain situations as either ‘crisis’ or ‘emergency’ not every aspect of daily living can be reduced to this. It is a very, very stressful way to live. In light of the foregoing it is little surprise that people, especially younger people, find themselves suffering from unprecedented levels of stress, anxiety and depression. If anyone is suffering from mental health issues - seek professional help. It is never to early to make an intervention.

But for those who are concerned, worried or frightened I have an old English proverb for you to reflect on:

“Worrying is like a rocking chair;
It gives you something to do
but it doesn’t get you anywhere”

In other words keep life in proportion, read and view widely and seek help when you need it - and be sceptical of those who claim to have all the answers …
