Calling local schools - maths masterclasses available!

For over 30 years the Dept of Mathematics has organised a series of Royal Institution Masterclasses for young people, and is now planning its programme for 2025. These sessions are part of a national programme of classes overseen by the Royal Institution.

Bath Masterclasses are organised in partnership by a team including the University of Bath, University of Bristol, UWE, and Bath Spa. The classes are sponsored by the Heilbronn Institute, and typically run on campus in Claverton from 10am-12.30pm on a Saturday morning,

Professor Chris Budd, responsible for the sessions, says: "The classes are attended by around 100 young people in Year 8 (age about 12/13) each year, with the students nominated by their schools. Each masterclass class is a mixture of short talks, and hands-on workshops, typically delivered by members of staff, PhD students and (communicating maths) undergraduates.

"We contact all secondary schools from Salisbury to Gloucester, and from Swindon to Weston-Super-Mare. Each school is asked to nominate who they want to send and we never turn a young person away. We put special emphasis on supporting schools with large numbers of underserved children to ensure they know about the scheme and these students get the chance to attend. Typically around 200 young people attend each class, and the feedback we get year on year suggests that they find the sessions inspiring and educational, but also incredibly enjoyable - they get the chance to meet other students who enjoy maths and to explore the potential careers they could use maths for in the future."

Any schools within the area outlined above who are interested in learning more about the programme should contact Professor Budd. Any University of Bath mathematicians (post grads and staff) who wish to get involved in the programme and support the delivery of masterclasses can also contact Prof Budd who would welcome your input.
