Bath students shine at Engineering outreach event

Four students teams and a group of researchers from the University were key to a recent successful event aimed at encouraging young people from Bath and North East Somerset to consider engineering as a future career choice.

'Brilliantly Engineered' is an outreach engineering event run by Bath Royal Literary and Scientific Institute (BRLSI) on Queen's Square in Bath, aimed at local families and schools, and involving both universities as well as all of the leading local engineering companies such as Dyson, BMT, Buro Happold and more.

Representing the University were Team Bath Heart, Team Bath Drones, Team Bath Electric Racing (alongside their sponsors Rotork), our student Women in Engineering Society, and 'Bionic Heroes' - a team of researchers working on haptic feedback in prosthetics.

Young people visiting the event were given the chance to get hands-on with the work our students and researcher have been involved in. Those interested in Team Bath Heart were able to have their pulse monitored and experience how it increased with exercise, before handling prototype artificial hearts. Our electric racing team ran reaction time tests so visitors could see how fast your reactions need to be to handle a race car. Young people were able to handle our drones and learn about the potential applications for drone delivered items for healthcare or emergency aid relief.

One young visitor from a local primary school was heard saying: "Miss, now I want to be an engineer". When asked if she wanted to be one before attending the event she said: "No, but I do now!"

Professor Sarah Hainsworth, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research) attended the event and met our student teams. She was very impressed by their dedication to their subject areas and the enthusiasm with which they spoke to event visitors, and expressed her belief in the value of outreach events like Brilliantly Engineered.

Any University engineering researchers or students who would like to get involved in next years' event are encouraged to do so, please contact us if you'd like a chat about the opportunities.
