There is controversy across the home counties today as campaigners begin a fight to reintroduce land iguanas into Surrey.  Dr Rita-Anne McMurrey-Jones, of the Bring Land Iguanas Back to Britain  (BLIBB) campaign, said that when Surrey was just a tropical swamp, land iguanas were all over the place.  "It's high time to reintroduce them", she said, adding: "It's well known that iguanas thrive on golf courses, and Surrey has a lot of these."

McMurrey-Jones stressed the educational potential of this move.  "Forget forest schools", she said, "When this goes ahead, it's golf course schools that will be all the rage."

Surrey County Council's Director of Wildlife and Spatial Planning (angling & golf), Imelda Dougthwaite BA, said that, although this was the first she'd heard of the idea, she doubted that elected members would approve.

"They spend a lot of time on golf courses, you know."
