These days I can tell the difference between yellow rattle and yellow archangel – and between ribbed melilot and weld – but I couldn't when I was at school. I can do this now because I'm interested in what these flowers (which I come across regularly on my walks) are called and what they look like, and I value their existence.
This is why I don't worry over-much about young (or not so young) people not knowing these things because they will come to doing so when they need and want to. [*] The same applies to me when it comes to distinguishing and appreciating grime artists. I'm desperate for this truly fantastic genre to become deeply and soulfully meaningful to me, but it looks as if I shall have to wait awhile yet.
