Discover how specialised neurology and anatomy courses reshaped my career prospects as a psychology student. This blog covers my journey, from initial challenges to newfound confidence, and how these courses prepared me for future opportunities in specialised fields like healthcare, medicine, biology, etc.
Why I Chose to Pursue This Opportunity
When I found out about the Opportunities Fund, I knew I wanted to use it to enhance my knowledge in a field that truly fascinates me: the human body and its complexities. As a psychology student I have only recently felt this passion about the medical field rather than psychological, so I was very keen to gain more experience in it. Neurology, in particular, grabbed my attention because of its connection to everyday functions—movement, sensation, and even thought. I saw this as an opportunity to dive deeper into these topics, which have opened up my career ideas about working in a biological, medical or healthcare field. Whether it's working directly with patients or conducting research, having a strong understanding of the body, especially the brain and nervous system, is incredibly important for me.
Starting the Courses
Before starting the courses, I was both excited and a little anxious. I had chosen two CPD-certified courses, "Level 4 Diploma in Neurology: Neurological Disorders QLS Endorsed" and "Anatomy and Physiology Bundle," both of which seemed quite advanced. The idea of studying neurological disorders, anatomy, and physiology was thrilling, but I also wondered if I was ready for the depth these courses promised. Thankfully, they were both courses that allowed its students to take the lessons at their own pace, and complete an exam whenever they are ready. However, I did keep wondering how challenging the material would be, considering I come from a psychological background rather than medical.
I began in June and would work every few days completing different chapters/topics at my own speed. The material wasn’t always easy—neurology, especially, required me to grasp complex topics like neuron functions and neurological emergencies. But as I worked through the modules, I became more confident in my abilities to understand the information. The best part was that I felt no pressure having to continue, so there would be days when I enjoyed going through many topics at once, and others I would just complete one. I had to balance my time well, balancing these studies with my other commitments in the summer like visiting family or friends, going on trips and holidays, and working two casual jobs at the University of Bath.
What I Learned and How It Changed My Perspective
This experience has given me more than just academic knowledge; it’s shifted how I think about the human body. I now better understand how interconnected our systems are and how issues like concussions or neurological disorders can impact overall health. I also gained valuable familiarity with medical terminology, which will be useful in future studies or work. The courses deepened my interest in neurology, and I hope I get to apply this knowledge in future career settings. The Anatomy and Physiology course provided a broad understanding of the human body, covering everything from basic biology to medical equipment and lab tests. The Neurology course, in particular, helped me recognize and manage neurological emergencies, deepening my appreciation for the complexity of the nervous system and mental health care. I loved how this course built on my psychology degree, expanding my understanding in ways directly applicable to my possible future career prospects.
What's Next? Applying My Knowledge and Continuing My Learning
Now that I’ve undertaken these courses, I’m eager to keep building on what I’ve learned. The knowledge I gained has given me a solid foundation to apply for a master’s course, go into healthcare work, volunteering experiences, practical work experience, and so much more! I feel so much more confident that I can catch up to students of a biology-based educational background, and I hope I can use my new skills very soon!
Would I Recommend This Opportunity?
Absolutely. If you’re someone who’s interested in a certain aspect of your studies, or perhaps a field you have little experience in, undertaking courses over weeks/months with dedication looks great on your CV and prepares you for wherever your passions lead you after your time here at Bath. Personally, the experience challenged me, broadened my knowledge, and gave me practical skills that I can carry forward into my career. I’m not just walking away with certificates—I’ve gained confidence in my ability to understand and navigate complex topics, which is invaluable for anyone looking to specialise in their career.
If you ever get the chance to deepen your understanding in a field that excites you, don’t hesitate, even if you have no experience of it yet!
