Research & Innovation at North Bristol NHS Trust are looking for a key role as a Research Assistant

This role is central to the development and delivery of NIHR Portfolio research carried out in North Bristol NHS Trust.

This is a 6 month Full time fixed-term post specifically required to develop support the development of a research project 'Improving best practice in relation to opioid prescribing in primary care'.

They may also consider fixed term part time (18.45 hrs) over 1 year as well.

The post holder will be based within the Pain Clinic at Frenchay Hospital, Bristol and will be accountable to the principal investigator Dr. Cathy Stannard, Consultant in Pain Medicine.

The Research and Innovation office will liaise with the post holder, monitoring delivery against the research development plans agreed with the principal investigator

Dr Cathy Stannard has received funding to support the development of a grant application to the National Insistute for Research in 2012 and the post holder will undertake the preparatory work to support this bid.

The research assistant will be responsible for conducting literature review work in order to facilitate design of an evidence-based intervention.

In addition s/he will be responsible for organising the input of GPs through group work to design the intervention so that it will be as appropriate and acceptable to them as possible. This will be done using robust methods including audio-recorded focus group interviews with groups of GPs to assess their knowledge and professional development needs and preferences.

The research assistant will also engage with patient groups and individuals to assess the how the study team might optimise the acceptability of an intervention to patients. In addition, s/he will analyse prescription data at national and local level to provide solid evidence about the extent and nature of prescribing for opioids in primary care that appears to fall outside the national guidelines.

The post-holder will be experienced in conducting research at post-doctoral, or equivalent, level and in an appropriate field.
