Media Spotlight - BBC Sounds

Posted in: Disability, Inclusion

For this week's Disability History Month Media Spotlight, we're taking a look at BBC Sounds - specifically their episodes on disability and the lived experiences of people navigating the world with their disabilities, as well as the history of modern disabled identities from the 19th century onwards.

All episodes of this series are available to listen to for free through the link above, and delve into topics like living as blind or partially-sighted, as well as what it means to be one of few disabled people working and fighting for the recognition of disabled rights in your space, such as Paul Maynard MP. The latest episode of Access All features a chat with recent Strictly Come Dancing contestant Ellie Simmonds and how competing on one of the UK's most popular dance shows has not only boosted awareness of disabled representation in popular media, but has also given her the confidence to try new things that many would have previously considered her not capable of. The Access All series - and other collections from BBC Sounds about disabled lives - are a great way to learn more about what actions are being taken to raise awareness but also how everyday decisions can drastically impact the lives of disabled people everywhere - as well as how important it is as allies to show support.
