Dr Despina Moschou shares her experience of hosting two Global Chairs of international standing at the University of Bath in academic year 2023-24

During the previous academic year I was fortunate enough to host two academic colleagues of international standing in Electronic and Electrical Engineering. Prof Tianhong Cui from the University of Minnesota, USA, and Prof Konstantina Nikita from the National Technical University of Athens, Greece and the University of Southern California. Prof Cui is the Editor-in-Chief of Microsystems and Nanoengineering, Nature Publishing Group and Prof Nikita is a Fellow of IEEE and the European Association of Medical and Biological Engineering and Science (EAMBES).

The Global Chair scheme was an excellent opportunity to solidify the interest and collaboration between my group here at Bath and both of these distinguished colleagues. It gave me the opportunity to show them my team’s work and laboratory in person, along with introducing them to my team members and showing them around Bath. More importantly, it was an excellent opportunity to introduce Prof Cui and Prof Nikita to the multi-disciplinary work across the University in the areas of healthcare, biomedical technology and artificial intelligence. During their visits we hosted several topic-focused workshops with numerous colleagues from different areas of the university along with opportunities for one-to-one discussions and collaborations. The public lectures were also a success, giving students and members of the local community the opportunity to engage and interact with the Global Chairs and their work.

The outcomes of both appointments have been exceptional, with Prof Cui already having accepted a part-time appointment in my Department here at Bath with several grant applications under way. The collaboration with Prof Nikita’s group is also expanding and bringing into fruition joint grant applications under the EU ERC scheme, along with PhD and M.Eng student project joint supervision.

Dr. Despina Moschou (MEng NTUAthens, PhD) is a Senior Lecturer and Royal Academy of Engineering Industrial Fellow, within the Department of Electronic & Electrical Engineering at the University of Bath, UK and a serial biotech entrepreneur. Her main research focus has been the development of disposable Lab-On-a-Chip microsystems for biomedical diagnostic testing and drug discovery applications.
