Creative and imaginative responses to the Images of Research 2022 competition

Posted in: Doing Public Engagement

A mural created by young people, an intricate microscopy image of photoreceptor cells in the eye and a view from inside a furnace, are just some of the entries that have been submitted to the Images of Research 2022 competition that celebrates the high-quality and impactful research taking place right across the University of Bath.

Images of Research 2022 competition

After a four-year break, the Images of Research competition returned this year for a one-off edition as part of the University's inaugural Research Culture Week.  The competition invited colleagues to submit an image and a short simple description to tell people about research and its benefits to society in five different categories:

  • Digital – research that is creating positive digital futures
  • Health and Wellbeing – research that is addressing pressing health and wellbeing issues people are facing
  • Local – research that is working with people from Bath and North East Somerset and creating positive outcomes for them and their communities
  • Partnerships - research that is working in collaboration with people outside academia including industry, policymakers and civil society and community-based organisations
  • Sustainability – research that is finding sustainable solutions to issues facing the planet and people

Here's a sneak peek of some of the shortlisted entries.

The response has been fantastic with 38 entries from 11 different departments and has included photography, images made by researchers themselves, by research participants and taken directly from research. Helen Featherstone, Head of Public Engagement, says:

I love seeing just how creative and imaginative our researchers are when talking about their research. It's brilliant to see just how diverse our resarch is and the benefits it's having on society not only here in Bath and North East Somerset but also further afield. Congratulations to all those shortlisted.
