Join the Festival of Social Science Steering Group

The Public Engagement Unit are looking for early career researchers and research staff to help shape the programme for the University of Bath's Festival of Social Science.

Festival of Social Science

Following our successful award from the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) of an Impact Acceleration Account, the University of Bath is a partner in the Festival of Social Science, an annual festival exploring the world of social science, from how society has shaped our local areas to behaviours that help fight climate change.

Steering group

To help shape our 2024 programme and ensure it represents our broad social science research, we've convened a Steering Group chaired by Humanities & Social Sciences Associate Dean (Research) Emma Carmel, and we're on the hunt for new members.

We are looking for members of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and the School of Management with an existing interest in public engagement, knowledge exchange and impact, to get involved.

We are especially keen to involve research staff, as well as less-experienced researchers onto our group, as they are underrepresented at the moment.

If that's you, we'd love to hear from you, or if you know someone who might be interested, please share this opportunity.

Why get involved?

Find out about different ways of doing public engagement; shape the profile and impact of our social science research; meet interesting colleagues from across the university; experience decision-making processes and develop leadership and influencing skills.

The Steering Group will shape the strategic direction and make decisions about this high-profile public engagement initiative, and we strongly encourage you to think about joining as a professional development opportunity, and towards the end of the time together as a Steering Group, we'll be able to help you reflect on some of the skills you will have developed that you can add to your C.V.

Time commitment

Between now and October 2024 we'll be holding three meetings each around 60-90 minutes long. In addition to these meetings, there may be some additional reading required ahead of the meetings, but it should not take more than 60 minutes.

Apply to be involved

To join the Steering Group, fill out the Festival of Social Science Steering Group application form and tell us why you want to be involved. The deadline for applications is Thursday 28 March 2024 at 4pm.
