Preparing to study abroad can be an intimidating process, particularly when searching for suitable accommodation. A variety of options are available near the University. Drawing from my personal experience and that of others, I have compiled information on these options and what you should know about them.
On-site accommodation
University Accommodation
- Rooms: both shared and solo rooms are available.
- Amenities: A small gym, accessible for both SK Global and International House residents. Rooms include a single bed, large desk, wardrobe, and plenty of storage space, including room under the bed for a suitcase, and own bathroom.
- Price: Approximately £1300 for a private room and £1000 for a double room per semester.
- Facilities: Lounge, computer room, laundry room, common kitchen on the bottom floor with microwaves, hobs and fridge/freezers, music room.
- Social Events: SK Global occasionally holds social events.
- Security: Key card access and front desk security.
- Pros and Cons: Convenient, cheap, social and safe with good amenities, but can be competitive to secure a solo room, and there are rules against guests and alcohol.
- Rooms: Girls-only, all shared.
- Amenities: Rooms are similar to SK Global, with each resident having their side with a single bed, desk, wardrobe, and storage space. A small, shared fridge is included.
- Price: Approximately £800 per semester.
- Facilities: Shared kitchen on each floor with a microwave, hob, fridge/freezer, small table, and seating area. Shared toilets and showers on each floor, laundry room with washing machines, dryers, free ironing boards, and a study area downstairs.
- Pros and Cons: More affordable but less privacy due to shared rooms. Competitive application process. Social.
Application process
- Deadlines and Documents: Pay attention to application deadlines and required documents. Applying as early as possible increases your chances of securing a spot, especially for the highly sought-after solo rooms in SK Global.
- Tips: If you don't get your preferred accommodation initially, email the housing office and express your willingness to be in any dorm. Persistence can pay off.
Location
- Both SK Global House and International House are conveniently located next to the Korean Language Institute (KLI) building and other buildings that host many exchange courses. It’s about a 10/15-minute walk from the main campus and main gate.
Off-site accommodation
Popular Areas
- Sinchon: Where Yonsei University is located, more relaxed, many shops, cafes and restaurants, very convenient.
- Hongdae: Slightly further, but still walking distance to Yonsei, lively and known for its nightlife.
Either of these locations would be great. Both are safe and easy to navigate, with great transportation connections to explore the rest of Seoul.
Types of Accommodation
Shared Flats
- Finding a flat: Social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook are great resources. There are communities that own multiple flats and often host meetups and dinners, providing an excellent way to meet new people.
- Price: more expensive than dorms, but cheaper than a studio apartment.
- Pros and Cons: Relatively affordable and sociable, but you’ll share space with others, which might not suit everyone.
Goshiwon
- Description: Very small rooms, often including free rice and kimchi.
- Price: Very cheap.
- Pros and Cons: Extremely affordable and basic, but very limited in space and amenities. Less social.
Airbnb
- Description: A range of options from rooms to entire apartments.
- Price: Varies widely based on location and size.
- Pros and Cons: Often more comfortable and well-reviewed, providing peace of mind during the application process, but likely the most expensive option.
Transportation
If you choose to live further from campus, buses and the subway are reliable options. However, both Sinchon and Hongdae are within walking distance of the university, adding to their convenience.
Conclusion
Whether you choose on-campus or off-campus housing, each option offers unique benefits. On-campus accommodation provides convenience, safety, and a structured environment, while off-campus options offer more independence and the chance to immerse yourself in the local culture. As someone who has experienced both, as I lived in International House for semester one and a shared flat in Hongdae for semester two, it really depends on your priorities. Assess your preferences, budget, and lifestyle to make the best choice for your stay at Yonsei University.
