Who am I?
My name is Sarah McLaren, and I am 20. I will be going into my 3rd Year of Architecture at the University of Bath, and I am a One Young World delegate, delighted to be representing the faculty of Engineering and Design.
What is One Young World?
One Young World empowers young leaders to tackle the world’s most pressing challenges. Together with 3 other delegates, I will be attending the One Young World Summit 2024, in Montreal, meeting others from the global community and attending workshops and speaker events. We will subsequently organise the annual Bath Caucus on 29th March 2025, where we aim to highlight the issues learnt. This is an incredible opportunity for me to expand my understanding of critical issues that I am passionate about.
What are my motivations for attending the One Young World Summit?
I am excited to expand my knowledge on Indigenous rights. I was deeply impacted by an exhibition displayed at the Art Gallery NSW, Sydney, Australia, called “Barangaroo” (army of me) by Brenda L Croft, displaying photographs of First Nation women and girls. This allowed me to further explore the country’s history, which ignited my interest in the effects of colonialism. I am committed to learning more about the stories of indigenous communities, who are underrepresented.
In addition, I am interested in gender equality. I am aware of the pervasive sexism that women face globally, with many denied education and job opportunities. I recognise my own privilege and see the summit as a unique opportunity to delve deeper into these issues and learn about women’s experiences from around the world.
Which of the One Young World Plenary challenges am I most interested in?
The Plenary challenges highlight key issues discussed at the summit. I am most excited about the “indigenous voices” theme, as it aligns with my interest in exploring this topic further. I am also looking forward to exploring AI, and I will be assisting a fellow University of Bath delegate to deliver a workshop on this subject. Although my knowledge of AI is limited, I’m eager to learn more about the increasingly important field.
What are my plans after One young World Montreal?
I am Co-Chair of the marketing team and will work toward promoting the Bath Caucus on the 29th March 2025. This involves creating social media content, physical advertising and advocating for One Young World in general. As an Architecture student, I enjoy graphic design and therefore I am looking forward to implementing these skills in advertisement. In the new academic year, we plan to recruit students with similar attributes.
Additionally, I want to continue researching and networking to enhance my understanding of the topics discussed. I have a passion for art and aim to share more indigenous artwork with students, inspired by my visit to the Art Gallery NSW. Overall, I want to find ways to address the global challenges highlighted by One Young World.
Thank you for reading. Over the next following weeks, the 3 other One Young World Bath delegates will be sharing their stories and motivations.
