In November, we are proud to welcome Professor Mark van Loosdrecht to give a talk as part of our monthly 'Water Colloquium' series. Mark received the world's most prestigious water award The Stockholm Water Prize this year.

Abstract:
Professor van Loosdrecht, together with Professor Bruce Rittmann, was named the 2018 Stockholm Water Prize Laureate for his pioneering role in the water-related environmental biotechnology revolution currently taking place. Rittmann and van Loosdrecht have both played a leading role by presenting new knowledge around microbiological processes in wastewater.
Mark's research has also led to a new generation of water treatment processes that make it possible to remove harmful contaminants from water, cut wastewater treatment costs, reduce energy consumption and even recover chemicals and nutrients for recycling. The Environmental Biotechnology research group around Professor Mark van Loosdrecht at Delft University of Technology in The Netherlands, has contributed a number of patented innovations that have turned wastewater treatment on its head.
Speaker profile:
Mark van Loosdrecht is a professor in Environmental Biotechnology at the Delft University of Technology. His scientific interests include biofilm processes, nutrient conversion, and the role of storage polymers in microbial ecology. He is especially interested in new processes for wastewater treatment and resource recovery from organic waste.
He has received several awards for his work including the Simon Stevin Award, Spinoza Award, Lee Kuan Yew Singapore Water Prize and the IWA Grand Award and a honorary doctorate from the ETH-Zurich and Gent University. He is a member of the Royal Dutch Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) and the Dutch Academy of Engineering (AcTI) as well as the US National Academy of Engineering. He has been awarded a knighthood in the order of the Dutch Lion and serves as Editor-in-Chief of Water Research.
