James Rand (WISE CDT Cohort 5) has been accepted on a 3-month internship with DEFRA (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) working in the policy area for DEFRA’s Chief Scientific Advisor.

The internship, funded by UKRI and DEFRA, is aimed at giving PhD students a practical insight into how government policy is influenced, formed and enacted by, amongst other opportunities, producing government briefing papers, participating in policy inquires and organising policy events. Based between Bristol and London, the internship is also aimed at showing how academic work is used within government.

Hopefully working on a DEFRA policy area related to the water industry, James’s PhD in Automating Reservoir Water Quality Monitoring will be extended to accommodate this opportunity.
