BBESS Games Night - 10 March 2022

Posted in: Uncategorised

The Bath Black Engineering Student Society (BBESS) hosted its first games night on the 10th of March. The night kicked off with an exciting game of One Night Ultimate Werewolf. One Night Ultimate Werewolf is a fast-paced game where everyone receives a secret role. The roles range from different werewolves to a wide variety of villagers, for example, a witch, a robber, or a hunter. Many of these roles have special abilities that will aid the player in gaining information. During a short 'night phase', the players determine who among them is a werewolf and vote to have them eliminated.

The games were intense, bluffs abounded and occasionally an innocent villager was eliminated. Some players seemed to naturally attract suspicion despite being villagers while the werewolves tended to fall under most people’s radar. As they say, it's always the quiet ones you should look out for.

Next, we played Mafia another social deduction game where instead of werewolves, members of the mafia are hiding among the innocent townspeople. Simply put, the objective of the game is for the mafia to ’kill off’ civilians until they are the majority, or for the civilians to kill off the entire mafia. When one of those two things happens, the game is over. There was also a doctor in the mix. The doctor is a civilian role that can save a player they think the mafia has killed at each night-time phase. The doctor’s unique ability has the potential to shift the power dynamic in the townspeople’s favour unfortunately the doctor managed to save a grand total of zero villagers.

Once the doctor proved to be of little help, players quickly adopted their strategies for determining who was responsible for the night-time murders. Some trusted their ears to pinpoint the gang members and were adamant that the rustling of a puffer jacket or a packet of snacks was a dead giveaway. Others went with their gut feeling that the mafia members must be sat within a certain area that always happened to be conveniently far from where they were seated.

Overall, it was a very enjoyable night with plenty of action and surprises.
