October 2017

Posted in: Uncategorized

Dear Overseas Partners,

Welcome to the October issue of the University of Bath International Agents newsletter. In this edition we are delighted to share some very good news for the University as the international student recruitment figures of this year are the most successful the University has ever seen and we have also been awarded Sports University of the Year.

Here are our highlights:

Thank You!^

We would like to start our October Newsletter with a big ‘thank you’ to all of our representatives for their contribution to what is the most successful international student recruitment outcome the University of Bath has seen.  With a small number of students still finalising their registration, we are on course to achieve our overall undergraduate intake target, we have exceeded our goal for new PhD students by a small margin, and surpassed by 100 the number of Masters enrolments we were seeking.  The recruitment to Masters courses represents an outstanding accomplishment.  Many of you will be aware we had set ourselves the challenging objective of significantly growing these numbers and to have not only satisfied that aim but to gone beyond it is something we are delighted to see.  Much of this credit goes to our agents for your support throughout the past year – we are really grateful.

We want to continue to grow our postgraduate community in the years ahead and with the 2018 admissions cycle already well under way we look forward to continuing our collaboration with you.

The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2018^

We are proud to share the great positions that the University of Bath has been awarded in the Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2018. We can celebrate that Bath has been named Sports University of the Year 2018, once again being the highest ranked university in the South West of England and retaining the 12th place nationally.

This new edition of the guide comments on Bath's strong links with business and the excellent prospects for our graduates, ranking 4th for the highest starting salaries in the country and top in the South West and 7th for graduates prospects at a national level.

After hearing these good news, Professor Dame Glynis Breakwell, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Bath, commented that "The guide describes our sports facilities as ‘among the best in Europe’ and how the performance of our student sports teams and our achievement in topping the subject rankings for Sports Science have all contributed to being recognised as Sports University of the Year. We have also topped the subject table for Architecture."

International Recruitment Team update^

As many of you are already aware, we were sad to say goodbye to Zoe Whittle as she left our team after 15 years and moved to a new position within the School of Management of the University of Bath. I am sure you will join us in wishing Zoe well in her new position as MBA Programmes Recruitment Manager.

James has joined the International Relations Office as International Student Recruitment Officer. His markets include India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Russia. James has recently completed a Master’s in International Relations at the University of Bath this past year. Before that he worked in China and Vietnam as a teacher after graduating from Cardiff University with a degree in Mathematics and Music. After studying at Bath himself, James is looking forward to encouraging students to come to the University and experience what he has enjoyed first-hand. Please, join us in giving him a very warm welcome and wishing him every success in the role.

Placements webinar

The University of Bath is highly regarded for its placements scheme, with large numbers of students choosing to do a placement as part of their undergraduate degree. In the Faculty of Science, around 60% of our undergraduate students go on placement and enjoy the many benefits this provides.

We are offering a webinar for students that are interested in finding on more about our Science placements – whether these be in industry or in a research environment. Interested students can sign up for the webinar which is being held on 2 November and they will find out more about: the range of placement opportunities available (much more than just lab work!); support available to students applying for and going on placement; choosing whether or not to apply for a course with a placement; recent placement experiences. Students who have recently finished their placement year will also be at the webinar to tell people about their experiences and to answer any questions.

The time has been set to also accommodate students within the UK, so for those that the timing does not suit, we suggest they register for the webinar and we will be able to send a link to the webinar recording afterwards.

Spotlight on our Business and Management courses^

There are lots of features that set our courses apart – both from the competition and from each other. Some offer a specialist route such as Marketing, while others allow students to work or study abroad. Most offer students the chance to gain work experience. Whichever course your students choose, they are guaranteed excellent teaching, personal development and great career prospects.

One of the biggest differences between our BSc Business Administration (BBA) and BSc Management (BMan) is the amount of flexibility on the BBA. This course offers far more flexibility on subject choice enabling students to tailor the degree to suit their own interests.

The BBA also features two compulsory six month placements as opposed to one year-long placement on the BMan (4-year course).  On the BBA, students can also study abroad in the final year. This option isn’t available on the BMan course.

Watch ex BBA student, Girish Shamdasani, talk about his experience on placement with Nomura:
