Environmental Education in Japan

Posted in: Comment, News and Updates

I spent a stimulating few hours earlier this week with two visiting researchers from the Japanese National Institute for Environmental Studies.  They came to the UK to look at policies and practices around environmental education of all things.  How refreshing.

Bath was their first stop where they met Steve Gough and myself.  It was a great opportunity to compare practice – and policies – around schooling and didactics, and, in the land that gave us the ESD Decade, about how environmental education and ESD do (and don't) inter-play.  Given Japan's recent experiences of natural disasters and their impact on its technological infrastructure (and, as a consequence, their confidence in it), it's no wonder that there should be a desire to improve people's understanding of environmental issues – and risk.  It would be a good thing here as well.
