Giving algorithms the vote

The Economist's Schumpeter column reports that Deep Knowledge Ventures, a Hong Kong venture-capital outfit, has appointed an algorithm to its board of directors.  VITAL (Validating Investment Tool for Advancing Life Sciences), having run the numbers, gets to vote on which companies the firm invests in.  As far as anyone is aware, VITAL is as yet unaware of its, well, vital role.

A sign of future times, perhaps.  Perhaps we can look forward to the time when universities appoint VITAL-like algorithms to their SMTs and run the numbers on investment and development opportunities.  It would have to be HEA-accredited, of course, ...
