Aichi-Nagoya 4 – the Catchphrase that isn't

Posted in: Comment, News and Updates

To help prepare for the UNESCO ESDFest, there was a catchphrase and logo competition with the aim of helping people easily understand the concept of ESD.  The winning catchphrase entry was from Noriko Kawamura, an elementary school teacher in Toyota City.  This is it:

ESD, creating me that will create the future

This probably works better in Japanese; in English it's not exactly catchy – or clear.  You can see that UNESCO's bureaucracy is concerned as it felt it necessary to post an explanation of what it means.  This is it:

Each individual is responsible for creating a sustainable society

Oh Dear!  Maybe there's a need for be another competition: this time to explain how this explanation helps "people easily understand the concept of ESD"?  Entries on a postcard, please, to: ESD, Japan – by next Thursday.
