Plymouth comes of age

It was good to see Plymouth doing so well in the THE Under 50s league table published recently.  I hope all that sustainability stuff they focus on so well has been part of this.

The THE says:

This is a ranking of the top 100 universities under 50 years old.  It provides a glimpse into the future, showcasing not those institutions with centuries of history, but the rising stars which show great potential.  The table employs the same 13 separate indicators as the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, but the 100 Under 50 Rankings 2015 methodology has been carefully re-calibrated to reflect the special characteristics of younger universities, giving less weight to subjective indicators of academic reputation.

I do wonder about that "glimpse into the future" conclusion.  We Brits do reasonably well out of all this with 15 in the top 100 (6 in the top 50).  These are:

  •   9 Warwick
  • 19 Dundee
  • 25 Brunel
  • 37 Plymouth
  • 42 Bath
  • 47 Stirling
  • 65 Surrey
  • 70 Aston
  • 71 Hertfordshire
  • 77 Herriot Watt
  • 83 Loughborough
  • 85 Portsmouth
  • 93 Kent
  • 95 Ulster
  • 97 City

Three of these are from Scotland you'll note: a good outcome, all things considering; inevitably, none are from Wales.  No one will be surprised by that.
