What has biodiversity ever done for us?

There was a message on the EE Maillist the other day, ostensibly from Brian Waswala at UNEP's Environmental Education and Training Unit in Nairobi.  It said "the Biodiversity Guide, supported by UNEP and GUPES, are asking for case studies from institutions" in the following areas:

  • Benefiting from Biodiversity - for example volunteering, health, environment and cost savings
  • Making Biodiversity Happen - for example campus planning, surveys and approaches
  • Communicating Biodiversity - for example campaigns and working groups
  • Wildlife Gardening on Campus
  • Buildings and Structures - for example nest boxes and green roofs
  • Wildflower Meadows
  • Ponds and Other Wetlands
  • Hedges
  • Woodland and Trees

We were all asked to complete an attached template to highlight current activities within our institutions.  Clicking on the provided link took you, not to a UNEP / GUPES site, but to a website in the UK: Biodiversity on Campus: an EAUC Practical Guide which has a very small number of UK examples (from only 8 universities).

I was puzzled as to whether this is a UK or a UNEP initiative.  Either way, as there were no instructions as to where to send your completed template, perhaps it doesn't matter.

  • Hi Bill,

It is an EAUC project supported by UNEP and GUPES as stated on the 'about' section of the guide.

There are in fact 14 UK institutions case studies in addition to a couple outside of the UK. Clearly if it didn't matter there would not have been any submissions, so quite possibly people do care about biodiversity.
