Congratulations to Zamzam Ibrahim

Many congratulations to Zamzam Ibrahim on her election as the next NUS president.  I know Zamzam from her chairing of the NUS sustainability working group that I sit on.   It's good to see another sustainability supporter elected to NUS's highest office, and she follows the good footsteps of Shakira Martin in that regard.  All the very best for what is always a demanding role.

Inevitably, I see that some newspapers – including one "of record" – have reacted to the election of Zamzam by repeating statements she made (on Twitter, I think) when she was 16.  16!  I ask you.  I'd hate to be judged by what I got up to when I was 16, and so it surely should be for others too.

I have formed a view of Zamzam by what she does now – in the time I have known her through the NUS – and shall continue to do so, resisting siren voices in their attempts to change my mind.  I shall do that myself (or not) if ever the time comes.
