The kindness of strangers

Posted in: Comment, News and Updates

As you'll be aware, the UN left Greta Thunberg stranded in Los Angeles and in a bit of a pickle as she noted in a recent tweet:

"As has officially been moved from Santiago to Madrid I’ll need some help.  It turns out I’ve traveled half around the world, the wrong way.  Now I need to find a way to cross the Atlantic in November...  If anyone could help me find transport I would be so grateful."

Happily, however, she has hitched a ride on a passing yacht (well, it was passing the east coast) and so she'll get to COP25 in Madrid in time to be a further inspiration, sped along by all those Atlantic low pressure systems that are causing people such misery in the UK at present.  The kindness of strangers, thank goodness, seems inexhaustible.

So here's a song c/o John Denver (and Peter, Paul & Mary) that she might well be humming to herself as she prepares to set out and leave all the friends she has made:

All my bags are packed I'm ready to go
I'm standin' here outside your door
I hate to wake you up to say goodbye
But the dawn is breakin' it's early morn
The taxi's waitin' he's blowin' his horn
Already I'm so lonesome I could cry
So kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that you'll wait for me
Hold me like you'll never let me go
I'm leavin' to cross the main
I don't know when I'll be back again
Oh babe, I hate to go
...
