Don't blame the teacher unions

Posted in: Comment, News and Updates

I've heard much comment recently to the effect that if only the teacher unions had not been so bloody-minded, students would have been back in school for some time.  But this surely this is a category error.

Teach unions' main interest is not in children or schools or the curriculum.  How could it be when they exist to further the interests of their members – teachers.  Saying anything different is like arguing that the National Union of Mineworkers should be primarily interested in coal, mines or mining, or that the rail unions should have the interests of trains, stations and passengers at the forefront of their minds.

No; if all children are not back in schools by September, I'll only be blaming the DfE – beginning with that hapless individual, the Secretary of State.
