Toilet Hummus

Notes from a Small Town

The elected council of my local town likes to present itself as "progressive", usually in comparison to the unitary authority in which it finds itself embedded which is both large C and small c conservative.  No surprise then that it has invested in new elegant "eco-sensitive" toilets in a local park.  These are waterless systems where liquids and solids are separated, with the solids then being composted.

As the infotorial in our normally excellent local paper notes: "Nature takes its course by worms and other organism work to breakdown the deposits into an inert hummus material." (sic)

"Hummus" it might be, but what concerned local eco-consumers will really need to know is: is it vegan?
