G20 Green League

Did you see the news of the UK's becoming the first G20 economy to halve its greenhouse gas emissions with the average household using less energy than in the mid-1990s – even when you factor in imports?  The UK's output is now below 320 million tonnes per annum – less than half the 652 million tonnes of our 1970 peak, despite the population increase.  A recent Climate Change Committee blog appeared to claim much of the credit for this.

I explored all this via the Guardian – which took me to the Climate Action Tracker as the data source, and via the Spectator.  Their respective take on the figures is instructive.  The Spectator put emphasis on the welcome fall in emissions, with the Guardian stressing how far there is to go if we are to meet Paris obligations.  There is surely scope for both points of view especially when thinking about schools.  I found the technical data on the Climate Action Tracker hard to follow, and suspect it's not meant for mere mortals.  There is certainly no risk of its getting 'best blog 2024' status.
