It’s time to cheer the Environment Agency. At a moment when it would have been easy for its senior leadership to be distracted by a deluge of public criticism over huge sewage discharges into rivers and onto beaches, reports of collusion between the Agency and government in an attempt to mislead the public over pollution, and its own retreat on net-zero policies, it has found the moral courage and conviction to focus on what really matters to it, that is equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) within the organisation.
Commendably, each director is expected to have EDI within annual performance targets, gender neutral restrooms/facilities are championed, the title Mx is available for staff to use, 7,000 rainbow lanyards have been made available to make LGBTQ++ support absolutely clear, the Agency supports Sparkle, its board and directors complete unconscious bias training, and the EDI policies of suppliers are policed for procurement purposes.
How admirable; surely a beacon for us all.
A real pity about all that sewage though …
