A festive message from our Vice-Chancellor

Posted in: Bath, Newsletter, On campus

Wishing you a very happy Christmas and New Year.

The festive period is a time for reflection and, as the current year reaches its close, it is clear that our University community has much to celebrate.

One of the biggest highlights of 2022 was being named University of the Year in The Times & The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2023 and we were delighted to maintain a top 10 position in all three major UK university rankings.

The results of the Research Excellence Framework 2021, published this year, saw more than 90% of our submissions ranked as 'world-leading' or 'internationally excellent'. Bath also outperformed similar institutions in the Knowledge Exchange Framework (KEF) gaining recognition for our work with businesses, IP and commercialisation, and CPD and graduate start-ups.

Bath-based athletes won an impressive 33 medals at the Commonwealth Games, the University was selected to host the 2023 UIPM Modern Pentathlon and Laser Run World Championships and, in collaboration with the University of Edinburgh, Bath was chosen to lead a new, high-profile International Olympic Committee Research Centre.

In the face of the cost of living crisis, we have come together to support our community. The Christmas appeal for the student Hardship Fund has raised £13,249 to date, enabling us to fund grants for at least seven students in need. We are so grateful to everyone who has donated.

We are keenly aware that our successes are underpinned by the support and excellence of our wider community. Our newly-launched President’s Award is designed to recognise exceptional and sustained contributions to the University, the City or the region and I invite you to put forward nominations for the first round which closes on Friday 27th January. I hope that, in the coming years, we will be able to honour members of our alumni network through this award.

I hope you have a happy, healthy and restful holiday period. Thank you for all you have done over the past year to make Bath such a special place.

With warm good wishes,

Professor Ian White DL FREng
Vice-Chancellor & President
