Researchers get creative for the Images of Research competition

A porous gold catalyst re-imagined as a coral reef, photography from a collaborative event for people with visual impairment and their sighted peers, and an illustration about young girls' experience of organised crime are just some of the entries submitted to the Images of Research 2024 competition.

Images of Research 2024 competition

After a successful two-year return funded by the University's Research England Enhancing Research Culture funding allocation, the Images of Research competition is back by popular demand!  The competition invited colleagues to submit an image and a short plain English description to tell people about research and its benefits to society in five different categories:

  • Digital – research that is creating positive digital futures
  • Health and Wellbeing – research that is addressing pressing health and wellbeing issues people are facing
  • Local – research that is working with people from Bath and North East Somerset and creating positive outcomes for them and their communities
  • Partnerships - research that is working in collaboration with people outside academia, including industry, policymakers and civil society and community-based organisations
  • Sustainability – research that is finding sustainable solutions to issues facing the planet and people

Here's a sneak peek of some of the shortlisted entries.

The response from colleagues has been great, with 37 entries from 12 different departments. The entries have included photography, images made by researchers themselves, images made by research participants, and images taken directly from research. Commenting on the entries, Sarah Hainsworth, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research) says:

It's fantastic to see how creative and imaginative our researchers have been. Seeing just how diverse our research is and the benefits it's having on society, not only here in Bath and North East Somerset but also further afield, has been inspiring. I would like to thank everyone who submitted an entry to the competition. My fellow judges and I are clearly going to have a hard time choosing the winners from such a strong field.

Join us to celebrate

Images of Research at Bath Spa railway station

Visitors arriving in Bath by train over the next three weeks will discover how impactful our research is when a selection of entries from the 2024 competition will join entries from previous years in an Images of Research exhibition. This free outdoor exhibition is part of the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) Festival of Social Science, a national programme of events showcasing social science research's value to our everyday lives running between Saturday 19 October and Saturday 9 November 2024.
